Happy Thanksgiving, e-Book Complete, and Fasten Off Yarn-a-Long

Happy Thanksgiving! Pumpkin pie makes everything right! Well, maybe not, but this Pinterest search of beautiful pumpkin pies is a delight for the eyes – even if you don’t like them or can’t eat them.

Pumpkin Pie Garland

Our e-Book is now complete with the addition of Sue McCain’s Holyrood Hooded Scarf. Inspired by the Outlander books and TV series, Sue says:

I pictured Claire racing across the lonely, windswept moors on horseback, dressed warmly against the elements, in colors that come straight out of the moor itself.

In honor of Claire and Jamie’s visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh (a must-see if you’re ever there), I’ve called the hooded scarf Holyrood. The twisted stitch pattern used in the hood is vaguely reminiscent of both mullioned windows seen in ancient buildings all over the United Kingdom, and the arched window frames seen in the ruins of Holyrood Abbey, after which the palace was named. Holyrood Abbey took its name from Holy Rood, which is thought to refer to a relic of the True Cross; bisecting the diamonds in this stitch pattern are horizontal and vertical lines which create a repeating cross motif. The oversized hood keeps out the rain and mist, and allows Claire to hide deep in the hood when she wants to pass unknown through the countryside, and the long scarf tethers the hood securely so can push it back to welcome the warmth of the sunshine on her face. The stitch patterns on the coat and hood are different so that they’re not matchy-matchy, yet they complement one another well.

We’re so excited to offer this collection to you!! It was a delight to work on it, to come up with these designs, and to see it all come together. I’m looking forward to our next one: the collaboration forces me to hone my craft, I learn so much from the other designers, and we have a lot of fun in the process!!

I haven’t participated in a large multi-designer craft-a-long since 2020, so I’m very excited to be joining the Fasten Off Yarn-a-Long (FOYAL) this year. This is an off-Ravelry event, which means that designers offer their patterns on at least one platform that is not Ravelry. There are games, discounts, lots of prizes, and of course, lots of admiring each other’s projects. Last year, there were 109 designers – so there should be many patterns from which to choose. The FOYAL starts November 24th. I’ll be sharing more deets about it shortly before it starts. I hope you’ll consider joining. I’d love to see some familiar faces there!!

Have some pumpkin pie for me – or whatever it is that is your favorite treat. All the best to you and yours.

Rannoch Moor Swing Coat, Part VII of Technicolor: Movie Night

Technicolor: Movie Night

Pattern VII: Rannoch Moor Swing Coat by Sue McCain

In Sue’s own words:

The Rannoch Moor Swing Coat was named for a boggy moorland of about 50 squares miles located in the Scottish Highlands. It’s lonely, desolate, and stunningly beautiful, and a place I want to revisit in every season. The coat is long enough and wide enough at the bottom edge that it covers the saddle and keeps you warm as you ride [Sue is a horsewoman]. The twisted knit panels that run down the front and back are textural evocations of cables and Scottish plaid.

Technicolor: Movie Night

Pattern V: On the Set

On the Set is a long (90 in.) skinny (4 in.) scarf by Knit Eco Chic. It features the same cable stitch used in the first four patterns of the e-book, with a lacy twist. Knit in 100% silk Malabrigo Moro in the beautiful colorway Sabiduria, this scarf is a lovely accessory for fall, winter, spring – and possibly summer!

Pattern VI: On the Silver Screen

On the Silver Screen is Lindsay’s garment contribution to the e-book. It is written so that On the Set can be incorporated into it and function as a collar/tie. How clever is that?! This construction really shows off the cables. It can be made with sleeves or sleeveless.

Technicolor: Movie Night is a collection of eight designs by four designers and is being offered in a staggered release.

Next week’s release, Part VII, by Sue McCain, takes a step away from our now-familiar cable motif and uses a twisted stitch motif that was one of the three stitch patterns from which our designers could choose. It is a lovely piece as well!

Today, and prior to next week’s release, the entire collection is $33.33. The price increases incrementally each week, ending with a final selling price of $40.  No matter when you purchase the collection, you will own the entire e-book as each new pattern is added (updates will be sent to you as each new pattern is added).

Technicolor: Movie Night, Part IV

The fourth pattern is added to Technicolor: Movie Night!!

Sylvia Got Promoted is another stunning design by Christine Guest.  From Christine:

“Silvia Got Promoted, so what should her uniform look like? How about a sweater the cape can button onto?

But what about hot days? Like when Siliva is on patrol in a Greenhouse? Well, the cape, collar, tabs, buttons and shorter button band will fit into her Silvia needs a Bag, and her sweater will still look official, because it has a cabled yoke too!

I made the sample for my daughter’s size, because it meant a whole lot less yarn support yarn to ask for, but the pattern is graded for sizes 32, 40, 53, 61, 68 inches, 80, 100, 133, 153, 170 cm at the bust.”

The magic of the two Sylvia designs is that they can be worn together. How great is this?!? Cape and sweater combined through the use of linked buttons.

Technicolor: Movie Night, Part III

Today the third pattern is added to Technicolor: Movie Night!!

Sylvia of ELF by Christine Guest is a gorgeous cabled capelet with absolutely stunning details!  It is knit bottom up, with separate button band, button tabs, collar and linked buttons.  K-dramas and fantasy comprised the movie inspiration for Christine.

The magical ingredient, linked buttons, allow for multiple wearing combinations of the capelet. The collar can be attached or not, the buttons can be attached at the neck or not without the collar. The capelet can be attached with the button band, the tabs or both at the same time. If the linked buttons are made with two buttons, there are even more ways to wear the capelet!

Technicolor: Movie Night, Part II

Today the second pattern is added to Technicolor: Movie Night!!

Calla Lily is an elegant cabled wrap, inspired by Art Deco fashion, which flourished in the 1930s and earlier.  In madcap comedies like Bringing Up Baby, elegant accessories reigned, whether the characters were larking it up on the golf course or traipsing around the countrysideWear it draped over one shoulder Katharine Hepburn-style or clasped around the neck.

This triangular wrap is knit flat, bottom-up and sideways, with increases worked along one edge only.  The cable is fun and interesting to work, and the rest of the wrap is worked in garter stitch.

Technicolor: Movie Night Premieres!

Technicolor: Movie Night, a designers’ collection, is here!!

The first pattern in the collection is my Hollywood and Vine Shawl.

The intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood first became known in the 1920s for its concentration of radio and movie-related businesses. In fact, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is centered on the intersection.  You could say that the inspiration for the Hollywood and Vine Shawl is filmmaking itself, the use of costume and fabric to create beauty, style, and the very look of a film.

Hollywood and Vine is a large structured shawl measuring approximately 65 x 47 x 40 inches.  Worked bottom up in DK weight yarn, a central cabled panel is bedecked by a lacy, vining background echoing the leafy central motif.  An edging that picks up textural details from the body of the shawl frames and finishes the piece. Complete instructions are provided in both written and charted formats.

I absolutely love the lifted yarnover knot stitch – it’s very fun to work, and beautiful, as well!  It creates a sort of faux cable, and is used in both the Leaf and Vine section and the knitted on border.

Technicolor: Movie Night Premieres October 2nd!!

Technicolor: Movie Night, a designers’ collection, premieres next week!!

Technicolor: Movie Night is a collection of eight designs being released starting October 2, 2023.  Four designers collaborated, choosing several stitch patterns in common, then each going her own way in designing knitwear based on one or more of those stitch patterns.  Our inspiration was the movies – so many ways to go, so much to inspire!

Movie Night is being offered in a staggered release, as was last year’s precursor collection, Technicolor: Matinee.

On October 2, the entire collection is $20. The price increases weekly, ending with a final selling price of $40.  No matter when you purchase the collection, you will own the whole e-book as each new pattern is added (updates will be sent to you as each new pattern is added).  The collection will be available on Payhip and Ravelry.

Individual patterns may be purchased from the independent designers about two weeks after the complete collection has been released.

I do want you to know that three of the patterns were included in the Matinee collection and are already available individually.  Those patterns are my Calla Lily Wrap, Knit Eco Chic’s On the Set (which cleverly works with her new design in this collection), and Sue McCain’s Holyrood Hooded Scarf (link goes to Ravelry), which was designed to work with her new design in Movie Night.  Both of Christine Guest’s designs are brand new – and they work with each other and last year’s design.

Worked bottom up in DK weight yarn, a cabled panel is decked on each side by a lacy, vining background echoing the leafy central motif.  An edging that picks up textural details from the body of the shawl frames and finishes the piece. Complete instructions are provided in both written and charted formats.

The designers participating in this collaboration, besides myself, are Lindsay LewchukChristine Guest, and Sue McCain. Last year’s collection also included designs by Laura Patterson and Jill Wolcott.  More details, photos, links, and more will follow in the coming weeks.

I was thrilled to be part of this lovely collection, and I hope you will join me at its premiere!!

Calla Lily Wrap & Technicolor: Matinee

Technicolor: Matinee is a collection of accessories designed by six collaborating designers.  The designers participating in this collaboration, besides myself, are Lindsay LewchukChristine GuestSue McCainLaura Patterson and Jill Wolcott.

My design, the Calla Lily Wrap [please note, link currently leads to Ravelry], was so much fun to design.  Featuring a cable panel on the straight edge, the wrap is then made up of lots of delicious, squishy garter stitch – which is the easiest stitch to work, to boot!  I have made four of these wraps – in gold, pink, purple and orange.  “Technicolor” is very nearly literally true for me with this wrap – which I suppose means that it’s still figurative…

A huge thank you to LL Yarn Co.  for providing the yarn support for Calla Lily.  This wrap takes 2 skeins of their Worsted yarn – which is really lovely to work with and creates the aforementioned squishy garter stitch.

This colorway is Golden Hour.

There was snow on the day of the photo shoot, and we used the vintage pin that had belonged to my mom as a shawl pin.  I believe that it is from the 1940’s – but I don’t really know its story.

This is Calla in Dusted Pink:

I hope you will enjoy the pattern.  It’s designed so that there are two parts that require more focused attention (the cable panel and the increase on each row) and the rest ror smooth sailing in garter stitch!
