Pumpkin Party

The Fall colors have been great, the pumpkin spice lattes have been tasty, and the knit pumpkins have been a blast! I couldn’t wait any longer to share these beautiful pictures with you.

The Knit Equals Joy Pumpkin-a-Long goes through Halloween – which means it’s still possible to knit a Wee Pumpkin before the end of the PAL – you can make one while handing out treats Halloween night!  The Wee Pumpkin pattern is just $1.25 or is free through November 10th if you have purchased any of my other pumpkin patterns.  Look for the “free” promotion to return again in early 2019.

Wee Pumpkin – Pattern Now Available

Hello, dear knitters!  Wee Pumpkin is here!

I wanted to write a pattern that would not only be cute, but would also be easy and quick to make.  This pattern is all three.  This diminutive pumpkin measures about 1 inch tall and about 1.5 inches in diameter.

It is knit flat, seamed using mattress stitch, then shaped, basically by cinching up the top and bottom.  Add a little fiberfill (I used cotton balls for the prototype, since I was on vacation when the inspiration hit), add a little stem, and you have a wee pumpkin.

They’re just the right size to make an adorable little gift.  Very quick to knit, too.  Mine was done, beginning to end, in under an hour.  My friend Missy knit two in about 40 minutes.

The pattern for this little cutie is for sale in my Ravelry store for $1.25.  It is available for free with the purchase of any of my other pumpkin patterns (past purchases also count). No coupon code is necessary.  This promotion will run through November 10th, then look for it to return again early next year.

This wee little pumpkin also qualifies as an eligible pattern in the Knit Equals Joy Pumpkin-a-Long (PAL), which continues through October 31.

Get your Wee Pumpkin pattern today!

Finally. The Willamette Valley Tee.

It’s quite interesting to me, designing knitting patterns. Not only in the ways you might expect: the conception of an idea, the swatching and trying out the different possibilities, even working out the most logical way to lay out the instructions. But also in this unexpected way: my sense of responsibility to my audience – the knitters who will be following my instructions and expecting beautiful results.

This sense of responsibility can and does cause anxiety.  It is the reason that it’s taken more than 3 years to go from conception to publication for the Willamette Valley Tee.

The very first post about this sweater was published on August 9, 2015 (What I Learned from the Swatch).

Then followed Colorwork Tee Progress (Aug 23, 2015), Yes, I am still working on the Colorwork Tee! (Oct 23, 2015), …and we have color! (Jan 20, 2016), Colorwork Tee Update  (Feb 4, 2016), Winter Ramblings  (Feb 19, 2016), and Sweater Surgery, or How I Cut Into my Sweater and Lived to Tell About It (May 5, 2016).

Finally, I threw in the towel with The Creative Project from H-E-Double Toothpicks (Sept 26, 2016). Well, maybe I didn’t throw in the towel, but I put the sweater away for a bit (a year plus!), hoping that the ideas might ruminate for a while and finally coalesce into a pleasing organic whole.

You just don’t know which events will give you the confidence to give something a try. Last year, our local yarn shop, Tangled Purls, hosted a series of customer trunk shows. It was a lovely way to create community and to allow us to appreciate the talent of our fellow local knitters. Toward the end of the series, they graciously invited me to participate. I included the old version of the Colorwork Tee in the tubs with my other knits, not really thinking it would be displayed since I didn’t use a yarn that the shop carries. However, they did display it, and people responded very positively (thanks, guys!), causing me to reconsider and to think that it might be time to give it the old college try once again.

During this year’s February week of vacation, I reconstructed the neck, shoulders, and sleeves, changed the palette slightly, and loved the result. Finally, I had the sweater I had dreamed of.  In the writing of it, though, I was not able to make it work in many sizes, as I had the Color Bliss Sweater.  So, this pattern is currently available for Ladies Small (32-34 in.) and Medium (36-38 in.) at bust.  If there is interest, I will continue to work to come up with a different construction that will work for more sizes.

Here are the pattern deets:

This wearable piece of art is a delight to make and wear. Using ten colors to create a beautiful interplay of pattern and light, this sweater would also look lovely in just two or three colors. Or experiment with stashbusting to create your own unique work of art.

This sweater is designed to be worn with 1 1/2 to 5 3/4 inches positive ease at the bust. It is knit top-down, with no seaming necessary.

Yarn:
The sweater shown was knit using Sunday Knits Yarn in 3-ply (light sport weight) (50 grams/approx. 246 yards), (20 grams/approx. 98 yards), in three interchangeable bases, Angelic, Eden, and Nirvana in the following colorways:
A. Bronze (Eden) 2 50g skeins.
B. Teal (Angelic) 2 50g skeins.
C. Lagoon (Eden) 1 50g skein.
D. Aqua (Angelic) 2 50g skeins.
E. Rain (Nirvana) 1 20g skein.
F. Ocean (Nirvana) 2 50g skeins.
G. Espresso (Nirvana) 1 20g skein.
H. Pickle (Nirvana) 1 50g skein.
I. Celery (Eden) 1 50 g skein.
J. Khaki (Angelic) 1 20g skein.

First Annual Pumpkin-a-Long (PAL) and a New Pattern!

Pumpkin-a-Long (PAL)

Hello, dear knitters!  I am so thrilled to announce our first annual Pumpkin-a-Long !  Fall is my favorite time of the year, and apparently I am also pumpkin-obsessed, so the idea of the PAL was hatched.

4C9D9593-43BE-455B-A955-5EE7A251256F_medium

I’ve released a pumpkin pattern annually, starting in 2015, so there are four pumpkin patterns to choose from: Mini Colorwork Pumpkins, Colorwork Pumpkins, Large Colorwork Pumpkins, and Autumn Spice Pumpkin.

The PAL runs through October 31, 2018, so there is plenty of time to knit a pumpkin (or three).  There are two ways to win prizes:

1. Winners of a coupon code good for one of my Knit Equals Joy patterns will be chosen randomly and at random times from among comments in the PAL thread.

2. Winners of yarn and other prizes will be chosen after the PAL ends from among posts in the Finished Objects thread.

Questions? Just come on over to the PAL thread and we will be happy to explain how it all works.

New Pattern:

Autumn Spice Pumpkin. This jumbo pumpkin is a joy to knit. Cables that twine over the surface are reminiscent of garden vines. Knit in the super-bulky yarn called for, your pumpkin will be a statement piece (39 inches around!), but it will be amazing knit in any weight yarn.  Use the coupon code pumpkins for 25% off through September 22.

Check out these beautiful Autumn Spice Pumpkins (photos used by permission).  Each one is uniquely beautiful and I love them all:

Bridgetown Cowl

Hello, dear knitters.  The Bridgetown Cowl pattern has been published and is now available on Ravelry!  This link gives you 25% off the regular price of $5.00 through Friday, June 8th (11:59 pm Pacific Time): Bridgetown Cowl.

The show-stopping Bridgetown Cowl is characterized by movement, color, and grace. This is the perfect pattern for that special skein of speckled or variegated yarn.

Make the two-color cowl for a color block effect or the four-color cowl for a stacked effect. The cowl is knit in the round from the bottom up, and the colors are worked by slipping stitches, so you only work one color at a time.  This is one of those “bang for your buck” patterns!

Yarn:
Use yarn with low to moderate twist, such as a single-ply yarn. The slipped stitch pattern works best with yarn that has some give and will relax in blocking.
• Use variegated or speckled yarn as the Background Color (BC).
• Use solid or tonal yarn for the Contrasting Color (CC) or Colors A, B, and C.

For Two-Color Cowl:

Background Color (BC): 1 skein Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (Fingering, 100% Merino, 420 yds/100 g) in Beautiful Liar. If substituting yarn, 190 yds (174 m)fingering weight yarn.

Contrasting Color (CC): 1 skein Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (Fingering, 100% Merino, 420 yds/100 g) in Coquette Deux. If substituting yarn, 145 yds (133 m) fingering weight yarn.

For Four Color Cowl:
Background Color (BC): 190 yards (174 m) fingering weight yarn.
Contrasting Colors:
Color A: 65 yards (60 m) fingering weight yarn.
Color B: 20 yards (18.3 m) fingering weight yarn.
Color C: 60 yards (55 m) fingering weight yarn.

I hope you will come check out this fun knit.  This makes a great gift – but you should make one for yourself, too!  Don’t forget to check out the knit-a-long while you’re at it.

xoxo

Test Knitters Wanted!

Hi Dear Knitters!

I hope this finds you well and enjoying the time of year when school is over or nearing its end, the flowers are blooming, and the temperatures are warming!

The Willamette Valley Tee is finally completed and photographed.  I love how it looks on my friend Hydie.  She’s so adorable and she’s an artistic soul herself.  I think that shows in these pictures.

It has also gone through its first set of tech edits and is currently awaiting the final okay. Before the pattern can be published, however, it also needs to be test-knitted.  A few lovely friends are testing it for me.  These friends are wonderful test knitters, and their sweaters will be knit lovingly and well.  However, I am looking for 2 more colorwork knitters to knit the size small (32-34 inch bust measurement).

The size small has about 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches positive ease built into the pattern.

The sweater is knit in the round, top-down, on size 4 circular needles using fingering weight yarn.  The pattern calls for 10 colors, but fewer colors may be used.  It also would be great for stash-busting.

If you are interested in testing the pattern or would like further information about test knitting, please contact me.  You can leave me a message here on the blog or I can be reached at knitequalsjoy@gmail.com.

Wibbly Wobbly (Timey Wimey) Spa Cloth Pattern and a Knit-a-Long

Hello, dear knitters!  I’m thrilled to introduce a new pattern, the Wibbly Wobbly Spa Cloth.

This is a fun cable-and-lace spa cloth.  It knits up quickly and the stitch pattern is engaging.  The vintage stitch pattern, Tilting Ladders, looks somewhat like the TARDIS, hence this pattern’s name: Wibbly Wobbly.  If you’re not familiar with these allusions, I refer you to Doctor Who.  Start with the Ninth Doctor (2005) and work your way through the seasons.  Some of you probably grew up on Classic Who; the series has been around for over 50 years.

Close-up of stitch pattern. Spa Cloth made by Janie.

You can purchase this pattern for $1.50 on Ravelry.  It will be free through 4/19/18; use the coupon code TimeyWimey at checkout.

I hope you have as much fun knitting this spa cloth pattern as I did.  As always, it was test knitted and tech edited.

A Knit-A-Long

I’ll also be hosting a knit-a-long of the Wibbly Wobbly Spa Cloth in my Ravelry Group through May 15th.  I’ll be offering some fun yarny prizes and some coupon codes.  Come check out the group here for more details.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by, and I hope to see you at the KAL!

All my best,

Carol

Easter Memories, A Friend’s Cute Easter Pattern, and the Willamette Valley Tee

Hello, dear friends!  Easter is nearly upon us, and Holy Week is here.  This means choir rehearsals and much singing for me over the next six days.  It also means many happy memories of coloring Easter eggs, egg hunts, dresses made by Mom…

Every year Mom made me an Easter dress. I always loved the pretty fabrics and the pretty dress designs.  Looking at the fabrics she chose – maybe she influenced me in my love of color.  Did anyone else have this Easter tradition in your family?  What other Easter traditions did you or do you have?

Speaking of Easter, my friend Torunn designed this adorable Easter egg hat pattern.

Here’s a link to the free pattern on Ravelry: Knit Egg Hat with Pompom.

Good news, the Willamette Valley Tee is in testing!

After much thinking and problem-solving – and practically throwing in the towel – I realized that the pattern was already nearly written for size 38 – and I was confident that it would work in this size.  So why not move forward and write the pattern for sizes 35 and 38?

Therefore, this design is available for sizes 35 and 38.  The actual measurement of the sweater is 37 ¾ in. (39 ½ in.) at the bust, and could also work for those in the 32-34 in. range, if  a looser fit is acceptable.  The pattern uses fingering weight yarn on size 4 needles.  It is written to use 10 colors, but fewer colors may be used.  It also could be a stash buster.

A couple of people are testing the pattern, but I could use a couple more experienced colorwork testers.  If you would like to test this sweater in one of these two sizes please let me know.  I expect the test knit to run about 2 months.

Here’s the pre-blocking photo:

Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful Easter!

The Ravellenic Games 2018: FAQ

The Ravellenic Games = awesomeness! But what do you do? How do you participate? This list of FAQs will help you navigate the waters and have a fabulous time.

Frequently Asked Questions – General

  1. The Ravellenic Games?? In a nutshell, Ravelry members have organized a site-wide knit-a-long that takes place during the Olympics. This forum is home to the 2018 Ravellenic Games. Cast-on occurs during the Opening Ceremonies (or any time thereafter), and projects must be completed by the Closing Ceremonies. There are events (categories of projects) and laurels (types of techniques). When you complete and post your project as directed, you will receive virtual awards and laurels, which you can proudly display on your project page and/or your profile.
  2. When is the event?   START TIME:  Friday, February 9 starting at 20:00 in PyeongChang’s time zone.   ENDING TIME:  Sunday, February 25 at 23:59, PyeongChang time.   The 11 posts in this thread have starting times for everywhere in the world.  Here in the Pacific Time Zone, I could cast on at 3 am this Friday morning.
  3. What are the rules? The rules are to pick a project that will challenge you, and to have fun!
  4. Do I have to watch the Olympics to participate? No, not at all.
  5. Do I have to be on a team? No, you can be a participant without a team.
  6. Can I be on more than one team? Yes. The rule is that each project must be associated with no more than one team.
  7. Why would I want to be on a team? A team is like a virtual knit night. We will exclaim over your projects, cheer you on if you falter, and dance a happy dance when you cross the finish line.
  8. Why would I want to be on Team Knit Equals Joy? We are really good at the above! And we have prizes! Read more below.

FAQs – Team Knit Equals Joy

  1.  How do I join Team Knit Equals Joy? Our team thread is here. You can post and say you are joining, or just join the conversation at any time. Tagging your project with ravellenics2018  and teamknitequalsjoy2018 will automatically designate you as one of our ravthletes.
  2.  Do I have to knit a Carol E. Herman pattern to be on Team Knit Equals Joy? No! You can knit any pattern you like. But knitting my patterns will give you extra chances for prizes! 😀
  3. What about prizes? We already have a queue of physical prizes like yarn, project bags and the like for our team. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the Games via random number generator and will be chosen from our team’s finished projects. We have a prize thread started here.
  4. What if I have questions? Post them in the team thread, send me a private message on Ravelry, or ask below.

If you are reading this, you are invited to join Team Knits Equals Joy. I hope that you will consider it. We have so much fun, and an event like this really does provide a lot of inspiration, incentive and encouragement to learn a new technique, finish a languishing WIP (work in progress), or even to frog something you never are going to make and free up that yarn for something else.

Hope to see you there!
